TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A Florida zoo announced the birth of a southern white rhino, the eighth to be born in Tampa as part of a plan to help the species.
Officials at ZooTampa at Lowry Park said the baby was born to a 20-year-old rhino named Alake last week. The female calf has not been named yet, but both baby and mother are healthy and doing well.
"The baby rhino appears to be strong and is nursing alongside her mother," the zoo said in a statement posted on its Facebook page Saturday.

CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WEAU) -The petting zoo at Irvine Park in Chippewa Falls reopened for after being closed last year because COVID-19. Families and Chippewa Valley residents were happy to get out to the park
"It gives something for the children to look forward to come to the petting zoo and see the animals," Altoona resident Nancy Raether said.
Owls, Cavy Mara's, a pony and more can found at the zoo. For Kaitlyn Williams, she is happy it's back open and have various playgrounds to choose from is a plus.

SAN DIEGO >> The San Diego Zoo’s two newest exhibits offer a glimpse of some of the world’s smallest birds and its largest, most fearsome lizards.
On Tuesday, the zoo debuted its new Komodo dragon and hummingbird habitats, located near the Reptile House and the Children’s Zoo, which opens later this year.

Zoo guests required to wear masks inside the gift shop and restrooms, black bear hammock bathroom, primate expedition cruise and queing area and in the giraffe feeding station.
Zoo vehicle gate closed on Saturday
Lee Richardson Zoo will be open to pedestrians only, no vehicle traffic, on Saturday, June 12, for the Beef Empire Days Chuckwagons at the Zoo, taking place on the west lawn of the zoo.
Visitors will be able to view all animal exhibits during regular zoo hours. Pedestrians are admitted to the zoo for free.
The entrance at the southwest corner of the zoo, off of Main Street, will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the Beef Empire Days event.
