Amelia Campbell, a shot putter from Britain, is considering retirement from athletics after being omitted from the country's Paris Olympics team, despite meeting the selection criteria set by World Athletics. Campbell, 30, won the British title last week and was among several British athletes provisionally listed as qualified due to their world rankings.
However, she was not named in the team announced on Friday. In an interview with Reuters, Campbell expressed her frustration and disappointment, stating that she is considering retirement due to the repeated letdowns she has experienced. She mentioned that this is her seventh championship that she has been denied, and that it "seems to be no point" in her mentally and physically pushing herself to these limits only to be let down repeatedly.
Campbell's career best throw stands at 18. 18 metres... which is below the Olympic standard of 18. 80 metres and the UK Athletics standard of 18. 67 meters, based on a potential top-eight finish. Despite this, she is ranked 38th in the world and would have been eligible for the 32-thrower field, as each country can only send three athletes.
Campbell is not the only British athlete who was omitted from the team despite meeting the world ranking criteria. Women's discus thrower Jade Lally, men's hammer throwers Kenneth Ikeji and Jake Norris... and men's steeplechaser Phil Norman were also not named to the team due to UK Athletics' policy of declining invites where athletes have not met their standard.
Phil Norman, a men's steeplechaser, expressed his disappointment and frustration on social media, stating that he had battled every step of the way this year on and off the track and successfully qualified for his second Olympic games. However, due to UK Athletics' policy, "his invite to the Olympic Games will be declined." Norman had appealed the decision, "but his appeal was rejected due to him being 0."15 seconds short of the required time in the 3,000-meter race. This news was obtained from ESPN.
