Heisk, an all-female band, has made a significant impact in the Scottish roots music scene by promoting gender diversity and mentoring aspiring female musicians. The band, formed six years ago, was inspired by a realization at a Celtic Connections Festival Club that all the performers were men. They set out to create energetic music while also addressing the lack of gender diversity in the industry.
Their self-titled debut album, released in 2021, was entirely created, produced, and promoted by women.
To further promote gender diversity, Heisk established a mentoring program for female or non-binary applicants in studio recording, marketing, sound production, business, and instrumental. The program received support from Creative Scotland and has mentored six individuals between March and November last year.
Heisk's newest member, Isla Callister, a fiddle player from the Isle of Man, has been working with the band and has written a few tunes with them. Isla, who is also a member of another band, notes that while her role in the all-woman line-up attracts attention, it is the fantastic work of [+]
