UK Ministers Consider Closing Passport Gender Loophole

Image
Ministers in the UK are debating closing a "major loophole" in the national passport that allows citizens to alter their gender identification. The current system allows for a new passport if the holder changes their name, gender, or appearance through plastic surgery. For a driver's license, a legal declaration is sufficient to change the sex recorded on the document. Equalities Minister Kemi Badenoch seeks support from other departments to close the loophole, following discussions with her predecessor Suella Braverman and a letter to James Cleverly, the current Home Secretary. The loophole is problematic as passports and driver's licenses are often used as evidence for gender recognition certificates.
