The proposed renovations at the Teignmouth leisure center have sparked concerns among some members of the Teignbridge Council regarding the safety and privacy of women and girls in the new, unisex changing facilities. Cllr Andrew MacGregor (South Devon Alliance Independent, Bishopsteignton) has expressed his dissatisfaction with the plans, citing the importance of preserving single-sex spaces that have been hard-won for women and girls. He believes that the council has rushed through the renovation plans without adequately considering the potential consequences, particularly with regards to the safety and privacy of vulnerable individuals.
In recent times, there have been instances where predators have targeted young girls in village-style changing areas, as seen in a case in Wales where a 15-year-old girl was filmed on a phone while changing in a similar setup. This raises legitimate concerns about the safety and privacy of women and girls in these new, unisex facilities.
While some small single-sex changing rooms will be retained, the new facilities will feature large, "village-style" unisex changing areas with individual lockable show [+]
