Begum, a former IS bride who is currently stranded in a Syrian refugee camp, has lost her appeal over the removal of her UK citizenship. In 2019, authorities withdrew her British citizenship soon after she surfaced in the camp, and she has been fighting the decision ever since. Last year, her lawyers brought a further bid to overturn the decision at the Court of Appeal, but all three judges dismissed her case.
The judges argued that Begum had made a "calculated" decision to join IS, despite being "influenced and manipulated by others."
Chief Justice Sue Carr stated that the court's job was not to decide whether the decision to strip Begum of her British citizenship was "harsh" or whether she was the "author of her own misfortune." Any arguments over the consequences of the unanimous judgment will be adjourned for seven days.
Daniel Furner, a lawyer representing Begum, stated that "I think the only thing we can really say for certainty is that we are going to keep fighting.
