* A stack of trays, similar to those used in airport security scanners, is present but not being used.

When someone walked up to Edgewood Middle School wearing what appeared to be tactical gear, it was an "immediate red flag" for the longtime receptionist who answered the doorbell, according to Greenwood School District 52 safety manager Mac Boudreau.

But the actions of the receptionist at the school and Ninety Six High School next door kept the school's precious cargo – the people inside – safe.
