TV Dramas About British Royalty, Ranked By Salaciousness

History tends to be more salacious than what is presented in standard textbooks, and television has taken notice. Over the past few decades, there has been an abundance of period dramas that delve into the private ⁙⁙⁙s of English and British monarchs dating back to the Middle Ages. If these series were plotted on a grid, one axis would range from highbrow to lowbrow, while the other would span from prim to filthy.

Each title's position on the grid would correspond to its overall salaciousness quotient, with the most educational shows located in one corner and the most sensational ones in the opposite corner.

The two British monarchs named Elizabeth have been the subject of several period dramas, with Helen Mirren playing both roles in the mid-aughts. In the two-parter originally aired on Channel 4 in the UK, Mirren's Elizabeth is depicted as a libidinous sovereign who consorts with Jeremy Irons' silver-fox Earl of Leicester before ordering him to leave when she discovers he's secretly married.
