OpenAI unveils ChatGPT-4o — cheaper and twice as fast as GPT-4OpenAI on Monday announced its new flagship model ChatGPT-4o — an AI chatbot that can see, hear, and have real-time conversations.
The company said in its announcement that ChatGPT-4o is 50% cheaper and twice as fast as GPT-4 turbo. It's making the new model available to all users, bringing "GPT 4 class intelligence" to free customers. Paid users will still have up to five times the capacity limits.
"For the past couple of years, we've been very focused on improving the intelligence of these models, and they've gotten pretty good," said OpenAI technology chief Mira Murati. "But this is the first time that we are really making a huge step forward when it comes to the ease of use."
OpenAI chief Sam Altman just showed he has what Tim Cook really wants — but Apple still has one big...
After OpenAI unveiled its latest ChatGPT iteration , one tech executive is probably super jealous: Apple's Tim Cook.
ChatGPT-4o, as they're calling it, speaks in a conversational way with lots of emotion — and you don't need to use ⁘wake words⁘ or precise commands like ⁘ Hey Siri !⁘ as you do with Apple's assistant.
On Monday, Open AI Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati showed off ChatGPT-4o's new voice mode, which is a voice chat assistant.
It's supposed to be able to have a natural back-and-forth conversation with you. (Though, OK, to be fair, the only part of ChatGPT-4o we've actually seen has been in a highly controlled public demo, so we'll see what it's actually like IRL.)
Sam Altman Says 'Voice Is a Hint' at the Next Big Thing in AI
OpenAI is gearing up for a much-anticipated spring update to GPT-4 and ChatGPT on Monday, and multiple reports are pointing to voice as the next frontier for Sam Altman's AI company. On Friday's episode of the All-In podcast , Altman indicated that voice-based AI systems, much like in the 2013 film "Her," could be a hint at the future of AI-enabled devices.
"I think you'd have to like find some really different interaction paradigm that the technology enables," said Altman, when asked what device comes after the iPhone. Then host Jason Calacanis noted that ChatGPT already has a text-to-speech feature. "We'll get that better. And I think voice is a hint to whatever the next thing is. Like if you can get voice interaction to be really good, I think that feels like a different way to use a computer."
