
While the album may evoke a sense of nostalgia, it is detached from any particular generational label. Pratt's music is as indebted to the Crystals as it is to the robust, flamboyant excess of contemporary pop music, building on the ecstatic magic of her previous album, Quiet Signs.
Pratt's historian's eye for the odd and the molecular is evident in her music, "which is both nostalgic and forward-thinking." Her songs on Here in the Pitch are a sonic promise akin to something Dirty Beaches would've made 12 or 13 years ago... while also being indebted to the Crystals and the ecstatic magic of her previous album.

Singer-songwriter Jessica Pratt's latest album is a distinct shift from her austere sound"There can be a real danger with people who have sort of originated as solo artists graduating into this full band incarnation," Pratt says. "It can result in a watered-down sound or like a homogenous sound if you aren't careful because maybe some of those more idiosyncratic qualities of the music can get stamped out."
So when Pratt went into the studio to record "Here in the Pitch," she was calculated and purposeful about the role each instrument would play.
"I guess we were trying to sort of think of it more as like a jazz approach or something, where the core essence of the music stands but there are these touches coming in to accent things," she says.

On Here in the Pitch , Pratt evokes the past of her city, specifically the dark underbelly of the Sixties and Seventies. She adores the Beach Boys , but she⁘s also a diehard fan of Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart. ⁘If you have an attraction to that era of time, generally, a lot of it goes hand in hand,⁘ she says. ⁘My music is often the product of an amalgamation of all of the influences that are going into my head.⁘
On an afternoon in late March, sitting at an Ethiopian restaurant in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Pratt walked us through the music that influenced Here in the Pitch . ⁘They're perennial tracks that I'll have in my head all the time or constantly return to,⁘ she says, tugging on some injera. ⁘Everything here is a part of that. I think there is a through line with all of these songs: a sense of longing and a sense of loss. That undercurrent of darkness coupled with the sort of poppier, sunshine top layer. I really like the conflict of those two things together. You⁘ve got to have the darkness and the light.⁘
Recent achievements include the release of her third studio album "Quiet Signs" in 2019, which was met with widespread critical acclaim and featured on numerous year-end lists, including NPR's "Best Albums of 2019" and Pitchfork's "Best New Music."
