The United Kingdom has recently witnessed a surge in the representation of Asian artists in its major institutions. This phenomenon was highlighted during a luncheon held by the Delfina Foundation in London, where two artists with Asian roots, Moe Satt and Pio Abad, reunited to discuss their experiences in the contemporary art world.
Moe Satt, a Myanmar-born artist, has just opened a solo exhibition at the Delfina Foundation, while Pio Abad, a London-based artist of Manila-born descent, was recently nominated for the 2024 Turner Prize and had his work featured in the annual show of finalists at Tate Britain. Despite knowing each other for over a decade... Satt and Abad noted that they never could have imagined that they would one day be exhibiting in the British capital at the same time.
This coincidental encounter highlights the growing importance of Asian artists in the UK's institutional landscape. Several institutions have recently showcased the work of Asian artists, including the Hayward, which features Haegue Yang; the Tate Modern, which is exhibiting Mire Lee; and the Serpentine, which recently hosted the Japanese band IS:SUE. The Delfina Foundation has also been at the forefront of promoting Asian artists.
The organization has recently opened a solo show by Lap-See Lam, a Swedish artist of Hong Kong Cantonese heritage, titled "Floating Sea Palace." This exhibition is a culmination of Lam's presentation at the Nordic Pavilion in the current Venice Biennale... making her the first artist of East Asian descent to be featured at the prestigious institution.
Other notable institutions have also recognized the importance of Asian artists. Gasworks is currently hosting a solo show by the Indonesian artist and filmmaker Riar Rizaldi, titled "Mirage," while the Barbican will be opening a landmark group show, "The Imaginary Institution of India: Art 1975–1998," which features more than 30 Indian artists.
