Exceeds Original Film's Opening Weekend Gross

The Mean Girls musical has made a successful debut at the box office, grossing $34.5 million worldwide in its opening weekend, exceeding the original film's opening weekend takings. The movie took in an additional $6.5 million in international markets ahead of its UK premiere on Wednesday, January 17.

The original Mean Girls film, released in 2004, went on to gross over $86.1 million in the US and $130.1 million worldwide, becoming a cultural phenomenon and modern classic. The musical adaptation, written by Tina Fey and directed by Casey Nicholaw, has been praised for its clever adaptation and stunning production.

"There are things written between the lines that aren't necessarily said but that I think are implied by the way that Tina adapted it, and then by the way that we also adapted it which makes me like it a lot," said a fan of the show.
