Begum, a former British IS bride, has lost her appeal over the removal of her UK citizenship. In 2019, authorities withdrew her British citizenship after she surfaced in a Syrian refugee camp. Last year, she lost her appeal at the Special Immigration Appeals Commission, and her lawyers brought a further bid to overturn the decision at the Court of Appeal.
However, all three judges dismissed her case, arguing that she had made a "calculated" decision to join IS despite being "influenced and manipulated by others."
According to Chief Justice Sue Carr, it is not the court's job to decide whether the decision to strip Begum of her British citizenship was "harsh" or whether she was the "author of her own misfortune." Carr added that any arguments over the consequences of the unanimous judgment, which could include a bid to appeal at Britain's Supreme Court, will be adjourned for seven days.
