Chicago Dance Month Events: Free And Ticketed Performances Unfold

According to the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Dance Month will feature a variety of free and ticketed events from June 1 to August 31. The month will kick off with a celebratory event at Navy Pier, showcasing African, Mexican folkloric, hip-hop, and other styles of dance. This will be followed by pop-up performances at the pier and around the city.

The Joffrey Ballet will also be returning to Millennium Park with a free event on June 16. The evening will feature dance classes on the lawn, followed by a program that includes works by choreographic titans such as Justin Peck, Cathy Marston, Christopher Wheeldon, and Yuri Possokhov. The program will also feature a world premiere, celebrating Victoria Jaiani's 20 years with the company.

Ensemble Espanol's annual festival will also take place this summer... featuring works by the renowned Spanish dance company. The festival will include performances by La Lupi and Curro de Maria, "who previously made a splash at the festival in 2022." Antonio Najarro, "former artistic director of the National Ballet of Spain," will also stage his work "Viejos Aires" at the festival.

Visceral Dance Chicago will debut its production of "Carmen.maquia" at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago from June 28-30. The production is an exquisite... Picasso-styled interpretation of Georges Bizet's opera "Carmen.

Chicago Dance Month (or months?): A few years ago, See Chicago Dance shifted its annual advocacy campaign from April to June, with free chances to see dance extending through the entire summer. A celebratory kickoff event at Navy Pier features African, Mexican folkloric, hip hop and more, teasing a full slate of pop-up performances at the pier and all around the city.

Joffrey for all: Last year⁘s rare summer appearance from the full Joffrey Ballet company in Millennium Park was so special, they⁘re doing it again!
