The Rise Of Women's Sports In England

The women's sports scene is experiencing a renaissance. England's women's rugby team, affectionately known as the Red Roses, recently claimed the World Cup title before a packed Twickenham stadium of 82,000 spectators. This triumph followed the English women's football team's, the Lionesses, consecutive European Championship victories.

The growth of women's sports is a relatively recent phenomenon. Several decades ago, the mere mention of women in football was often met with skepticism. The Football Association's about-face on the women's game took nearly 50 years to materialize. The 1970s and 1980s saw slow but steady progress. A significant turning point arrived with the 2012 London Olympics. Team GB's women's football match against Brazil at Wembley drew an audience of over 70,000, marking a watershed moment for the sport.

According to an FA study, the number of women and girls participating in football surged by 56 percent over a four-year period. The Women's Super League (WSL) has also experienced remarkable growth. In the 2016-2017 season, the highest attendance at a WSL match was 2,648 for a Chelsea versus Manchester City game.

The Red Roses blossomed last weekend as the England women's rugby team won the World Cup in front of a record 82,000 Twickenham full-house.
